Search engine optimization is a set of procedures adopted to improve the chances of a website appearing in the initial couple of pages in search engine results. 1) Search engine marketing: Also known as SEM, it involves marketing of yourwebsite through search engines. It involves online organic search engine placements and pay-per-click advertising through Google AdSense advertising.

2) SERPS: It is an abbreviation for Search Engine Research Panel, which denotes the organic search results which are displayed whenever we type a keyword in the search engine.

3) Anchor text: It is the text which is hyperlinked to take you to another web page. The number of inbound links a particular website gets from other trusted sites is an indication of its popularity and reliability. It plays a very significant role in improving the Google search ranking of the recipient web page. However, excessive stuffing of links with the same anchor text on the same website is taken as an indication of poor search engine optimization, resulting in banning of the site by Google.

4) Backlinks: In SEO terminology, back links mean the number of inbound links that connect from another site to yours. They are important because they measure the popularity your website enjoys amongst the web audience. Backlinks can be good or bad. Backlinks obtained from reputed websites hosting a theme similar to yours is considered good, and helps in boosting your page ranking; while backlinks from shady places like link farms are likely to harm your prospects of building up respectable link popularity.

5) Link exchange: In link exchange, two or more websites place each other’s links on their web pages. In reciprocal link exchange, two websites interlink each other. Three way link exchange programs are also possible, wherein website A links to website B, website B to C, and C links back to A. Generally, such types of link exchanges are hard for Google search engine to track. Google search engine generally places less weightage to reciprocal and closed loop links, as these are often the result of link trades and do not portray the actual website quality. Google looks for quality one way links to decide on the ranking.

6) Page rank: Page rank (PR) is Google’s patented procedure of assessing the importance and relevance of a particular website. Though the exact methodology adopted by Google to arrive at a page rank is not clear to anybody, it is clear that Google provides a decent page rank to sites having healthy link building policies.

7) Keywords: Keywords are the most important on-page SEO factors for any website. Search engines match the website’s keywords against search strings. It is therefore of utmost importance to optimize your website for the proper keywords. With millions of websites offering the same products and services, it is next to impossible to achieve good page ranks with a single word search string. It is also quite difficult to let the reader know about your website with a single word search string. To achieve good results in keyword optimization, go for 2-3 word search strings which tend to aptly describe your product. Also think from the customer’s perspective to find out what keywords are likely to be searched more, and use them properly in your website content.

Search Engine Optimization sounds as if it should be a task best reserved for a specialist. It is, however, something all webmasters should tackle as a matter of course. The first time webmaster will probably not have a natural ability to send his website to the top of the search engine lists in a matter of days. He should, however, do sufficient optimization to ensure that nothing on his website is actually working against his success with search engines.

As a first step in the search engine optimization of your website, check to make sure you are not making any of these common mistakes.

1. Failing to use the right keywords. Take advantage of the tools available online to research the right keywords for your website. You need to have keywords real visitors will be searching for. An example of good keyword/bad keyword is an airline using the keyword phrase “low cost tickets” when its visitors would be searching for their product using the words “cheap flights”.

2. Keyword Spamming. If you use the same keyword too many times, there is a danger the search engines will consider this to be spam and will penalize your website accordingly. Keyword spamming can relate to phrases used in your website meta tags as well as to the anchor text on your website.

3. Keyword Stuffing. This is similar to keyword spamming. The offence is frequently found in “alt” tags where the website owner places keywords in the tags instead of an accurate description of the graphic.

4. Using Keywords Unrelated To Your Website. Inserting popular keyword search phrases that have nothing to do with your website content into your meta tags is a sure way of getting dumped by the search engines.

6. Using minute text. This is a variation of using invisible text. Instead of making the text and the background the same color, the text is reduced to a size too small to be read by human visitors. Adding a string of tiny keywords does not work, the search engines can recognise when keywords are being used naturally and not just placed on a web page in a list.

7. Having broken links. Make sure you regularly check all links on your web pages. A bad link is a sure way of upsetting the search engine bots when they come to visit. If you are marketing affiliate products, keep an eye on the links to the vendors’ sites. When you delete of move things on your website, remember that one small change can have all sorts of repercussions if your housekeeping results in a broken link on another page.

8. Not Using Alt Tags. The search engines cannot see graphics, they rely on text. Therefore, you should use an “alt” tag for every image. The tag should accurately describe the image. The “alt” tags are also beneficial to blind or partially sighted visitors who rely on audio assistance to “see” your web pages.

9. Not Using All The Meta Tags Correctly. Make sure you use each and every recognised meta tag and use them correctly. If you are one of those, or maybe just don’t have the funds to hire a SEO expert, here are 12 Search Engine Optimization tips, that you can use to make your blog, a well search engine optimized blog.

Sitemap
A simple basic feature that every blog and website should have. By having a sitemap you make sure that When the search engine spider is crawling your site, it will crawl each and every page of it.

SEO-Friendly URLs
Look at these two URLs for the same page- 1- http://myblog.com/12.23.4 2- http://myblog.com/6-ways-to-make-money If you are looking for ways to make money online, which one of these are you more likely to click? Which one of those two URLs you like better?… So do the search engines! The first one doesn’t tell you anything about what that page is about, therefore the search engine spider has to spend more time on your site to see if you have any content related to the keywords that the searcher is looking for. Spiders don’t like to spend too much time looking for things, so they just look for it elsewhere. And there goes your opportunity to rank for that keyword.
Make sure you have search engine friendly URL. It takes less than 10 second to set it up, but it goes a long way when it comes to search engine optimization.

Page Title
It should come to you as no surprise that the title of your page(article/post) is the most important thing, determining the subject of your article. Make sure you do use your main keyword in your title. Also remember to not make your title too long.

Bold Tags
Search Engine spiders are programmed to count bold text as something important. By making your main keywords bold, you make it easier for spiders to figure out what your page is about, therefor you have a better chance of ranking higher for those keywords. Unique and usefule Content

Some people think linking to the home page is a better way, it’s a mistake! Constantly linking to your home page will appear to search engines as if though you don’t have much content on your site to link to.

Backlinks
Although quality backlinks(links from high rankling authority sites that are also relevant to your niche) are much more important and useful when it comes to ranking, none quality backlinks wont hurt either. Of course, you should always focus on building quality backlinks, but whenever you get a chance, build backlinks, no matter where they come from. Lower quality backlinks may not help much when it comes to SEO, but they are still helpful for driving targeted traffic to your site.

Social Bookmarking
This is one of the easiest ways to not only get backlinks, but also quality targeted traffic as well. Google loves social bookmarking networks, and it crawls them multiple times a day. But, make sure you don’t over do it. Make it look natural and believable. RSS Submission
